Pacific Gas & Electric’s headquarters buildings at 245 Market and the former Matson Building at 215 Market Street were originally constructed in the early 1920s and were damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. During the retrofit process, the buildings were structurally joined and consolidated with two adjacent PG&E buildings at one address, 245 Market Street. The three-year construction program included selective demolition, seismic reinforcement and interior renovation of approximately 750,000 SF spread over four historic buildings, ranging in height from 8 to 18 stories. Sensitive to the construction process was a six-story continuously operating computer facility located in the middle of the complex.
